Beginning with two elegiac sections about personal loss, the collection moves towards de Kok’s well-known, profound explorations of the enduring, complex and often asymmetrical relation between personal life and public conditions—something that has engaged lyrical poetry and especially feminist poetry for the last fifty years.
In Unleaving de Kok reflects again upon that relation, while also affirming the experiences of ageing—its losses, desires, rages, solitudes, friendships and joys.
Unleaving received the JDL Award for Poetry in the 2025 AVBOB Poetry Competition for Best Published Collection of Poetry in the English language Category.
Ingrid de Kok is the award-winning author of six collections of poetry, including Terrestrial Things, Seasonal Fires: new and selected poems and Mappe del corpo, a translation of selected poems into Italian by Paola Splendore. Ingrid’s work has been translated into nine other languages and is taught around the world. She has been a resident at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Centre, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation and the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Programme. Her awards include the Herman Charles Bosman Prize for English Literature, the South African Literary Award, the Ritratti di Poesia Prize from La Fondazione Cultura e Arte in Rome and a Molteno Gold Medal from the Khula Cape Foundation. Vetplant Fairies in collaboration with poet Antjie Krog and artist Fiona Moodie, was published in 2022. Ingrid lives in Cape Town, South Africa.
